Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

(a)   Give the meaning of the following words as used in the passage: One-word answers or short phrases will be accepted.

(i)               confounded- used for emphasis, especially to express anger or annoyance.

(ii)             Clustered- growing or situated in a group.

(iii)          Remorse- deep regret or guilt for a wrong committed.

 

(b) Answer the following question firefly in your own words.

       i.            Why did Vicomte decide to lower the rent?

Answer: - Vicomte thought that the house rent was too high and was being a burden on the tenants. Thus, he decided to lower it.

     ii.            What was Bernard's reaction to the decision?

Answer: - Bernard was hugely surprised and became anxious. He considered this decision of Bernard would incur huge loss to him. He did not approve of the decision of lowering the house rents.

  iii.            How did the tenants react immediately after Bernard informed them of the decision?

Answer: - He was a man of principles due to which he decided to wave off the rent for his tenants. But they reacted weirdly and panicked. They thought something must have been wrong with the house which was their rent is reduced.

  iv.            Mention some of the reasons the tenants offering to explain the proprietor’s strange action.

Answer: - The first reason is that there was a press for printing counterfeit money in the cellar. The second reason was the man must have done a crime . The third reason was the house which was badly built .

     v.            Eventually what happened to the house?

Answer: -
